Bio:
Gerard's childhood memories always include music. His parents encouraged his musical talents and he received his first guitar one Christmas while he was still in elementary school. From then on, there was no stopping him; he could be found singing and playing for family gatherings and holiday parties and making crude tape recordings of the basement band “Driftwood Jammers” consisting of his brothers and a neighborhood friend.
He attributes his musical gift to God, and his mother, Marilyn, who sang in choirs and chorales all her life. Gerard took formal guitar lessons when he was in grade school and as an adult, he has grown in his repertoire and abilities; adding electric guitar, mandolin and harmonica. While growing up, Gerard's biggest influences musically and stylistically, were artists such as Neil Young and the Eagles. Today his range and repertoire have expanded to the point that some refer to him as “Jukebox Gerard”.
Music is more than a hobby or pastime for Gerard; he considers it to be a vocation, a calling. This calling prompted him to begin using his musical gifts in the service of others starting when he was in the Navy stationed in California. He began playing and singing for church services and continues to this day; currently leading three different music groups and, with his wife, providing music for retreats, weddings, and funerals.
His commitment to growing and improving as a musician as well as a music minister is evidenced by his annual attendance in guitar “master” classes at the National Association Of Pastoral Musicians Guitar & Ensemble Institute since 1995. In addition to guitar classes he has also attended sessions for Bass, Keyboard, Percussion, Voice, Liturgy, and Ensemble tracts. He continually looks for new ways to improve his skills including jamming with other musicians and using Internet & DVD instructional resources.
But Gerard's music ministry is more than just church. Through the years, Gerard has performed folk, rock and country music all around Rochester, including the Park Avenue Festival, Lilac Festival, Alternative Fair, and Golden Link's Potpourri Jam and Turtle Hill Festival. He has performed at local clubs, coffeehouses, public markets, and Frontier Field. He performed with bands such as Misty River, Gerard 'n Friends, No Direction and ScratchTracks; and has hosted open mics and jams. Gerard performed and recorded with the Christian Rock band “All4wut?” for their 2010 debut CD “Lakeside Memoirs”. While with All4wut?, he performed at Rhino's (Marina Auto) Stadium and for Kingdom Bound Music Festival at Darien Lake.
Gerard takes great joy in using his music to entertain people and can be found performing solo or with others at local coffeehouses, performing at one of the many Senior Living Communities; rocking out with a full band, or playing for elementary kids at a school. Simply knowing that the music he plays, whether it's religious, pop, modern, oldies – whatever – lifts peoples' spirits, connects them with memories of another time, or gets their feet tapping and their voices singing along to a familiar song; this is at the heart of why Gerard does what he does.
